When we talk about sexual intercourse in class, we often find questions about sexual crimes in the Everything You Ever Wanted to Know question box. So we want to tell you something about this subject, in case you too have questions about it.

Parents sometimes worry about bringing up the topic of sexual crimes with their children because they don’t want to scare them. Many parents want to protect their children from even hearing about such terrible things. This is understandable, but the fact of the matter is sexual crimes do happen. We feel that the best way to protect children from sexual crimes is to make sure they know about these things and are prepared to handle the situation if they become victims of a sexual crime.

Rape-Rape means forcing someone to have sex against his or her will. It can happen to anyone — young children, adults, people of any age. Most rape victims are females, and most rapists are males. It’s possible for a woman to hold a gun to a man’s head and force him to have intercourse with her, or for a woman to force a person (male or female) to have oral-genital sex with her or something like this. And probably somewhere in the world at some-time such things have happened. It is also possible for a man to be raped by another man. By and large, though, rape cases involve a male raping a female.

If you are a victim of rape, it’s important that you know what to do. The most important thing is to get help right away. Some rape victims are so upset by what’s happened that they just want to go home and try to forget the whole thing. But, a rape victim needs medical attention as soon as possible. Even if the victim doesn’t seem to have any serious injuries, there could be internal injuries that need medical attention. The victim also needs to be tested to make sure that he or she hasn’t got a sexually transmitted disease as a result of the rape. (These tests are one reason why a victim shouldn’t bath or shower before seeking medical attention.) If the victim is a woman, she needs a test to make sure she isn’t pregnant and she may want to take the morning after pill to prevent pregnancy. And a rape victim should seek help because he or she will need support to recover emotionally as well as physically.

If you are a rape victim, there are a number of ways to go about getting help. You can go to a hospital casualty department or call the police, who will take you to hospital. There are Rape Crisis Centres in most big towns and cities. You can find the number of the centre closest to your home in your telephone directory, or directory inquiries will be able to put you in contact with doctors who are specially trained to help rape victims. Their service is entirely confidential (private), so don’t be afraid to ring them.
